Thomas Hardy, New Year's Eve, 1900

The Darkling Thrush, from the Hardy Society blog

Last verse:

"So little cause for carolings

Of such ecstatic sound

Was written on terrestrial things

Afar or nigh around,

That I could think there trembled through

His happy good-night air

Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew

And I was unaware."

A cheerful prognosis for 2012 from 27 economists! The return of recession. Thanks for the good news. I think I'll consult the oracles at Delphi and Dodoni.

The answer will be...

One note of optimism!

But I've just discovered the grim concept of "managed decline" which has apparently been in use for a very long time.
