Jurassic Stone Sculpture, Weymouth Relief Road

Normally I like environmental sculptures and installations made of stone. I certainly support the idea of funds being used for significant works of public or environmental art, if the location and concept are right.

The BBC reported on the unveiling of  Richard Harris's work.

The age of the stones was a source of inspiration, and the creative concept had its merits, but the way they have been installed like mushrooms on top of steel plinths standing in a pond beside a roundabout, with an electricity pylon towering up behind them, does little to make them objects of contemplation or an appropriate welcoming artwork for the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

Locals complain that the cost (£335,000) would have been better spent on repairs to the damaged Weymouth port harbour wall.
